🌞 Why move to Torrox Costa?
Every year, Torrox Costa draws hundreds of northern Europeans in search of sunshine, tranquillity and an affordable quality of life. With 320 days of sunshine a year, stunning beaches just minutes away, an active expat community (French, British, German), and a cost of living well below France or Belgium, it's easy to see the appeal.
Whether you're retired, working remotely, running your own business, or simply looking for a fresh start, Torrox strikes a rare balance between authentic Andalusian charm and modern amenities. Many expats top up their income by renting out their property short-term while they're away — a welcome extra source of revenue.

🛂 Do I need a visa?
EU / EEA / Swiss citizens
No visa required. As an EU citizen, you benefit from freedom of movement. You can settle in Spain without prior authorisation and stay for as long as you like.
Your only obligations:
- Get your NIE (tax identification number)
- Register on the Padrón (municipal register)
- Take out health insurance if you don't have access to Spanish social security
Non-EU citizens
If you're Canadian, American, British (post-Brexit), or any other non-EU nationality, you'll need a long-stay visa before arriving. The main options:
- Retirement visa (pensionado) — if you receive a sufficient pension
- Non-lucrative residence visa — if you have sufficient passive income (investments, rental income)
- Work visa — if you have a Spanish employment contract
- Entrepreneur visa — if you're starting a business in Spain
- Golden Visa — if you invest at least €500,000 in Spanish property
These visas are applied for from your home country, at the Spanish consulate. Processing time: 1-3 months. Once in Spain, you'll need to apply for your TIE (Tarjeta de Identidad de Extranjero) — your physical residence card.
🆔 Getting your NIE
What is the NIE?
Your NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is your tax identification number in Spain — roughly the equivalent of a French social security number. Format: X-1234567-Y. If you're planning to get a VUT licence to rent out your property, the NIE is the mandatory first step.
The NIE is required to:
- Buy or sell property
- Open a Spanish bank account
- Sign an employment contract
- Register a car
- Pay your taxes
- Set up a business
How to get your NIE
Where: the Oficina de Extranjería in Málaga, or your nearest police station (Comisaría de Policía Nacional).
Documents needed:
- Completed EX-15 form (downloadable from the Ministerio del Interior website)
- Original passport + photocopy
- Proof of the reason for your request (purchase offer, job offer, etc.)
- Payment of the fee (Modelo 790 — around €12)
Timeframe: 1 to 3 months depending on demand.
Tip: book your appointment online at sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es. Slots fill up fast — book several weeks ahead.
💡 Alternative: you can hire a gestoria to handle the application on your behalf (€100-150). Saves time and administrative headaches.

🏥 Healthcare: getting medical care in Spain
For EU retirees
If you're a French retiree receiving a French pension, you're covered by European health coordination. Request the S1 form (formerly E121) from your French pension fund. This form gives you free access to Spanish public healthcare.
Once in Spain with your S1:
- Register at the Centro de Salud de Torrox with your S1 + Padrón
- You'll receive your tarjeta sanitaria (Spanish health card)
- Free consultations, emergencies and public hospital care
For workers
If you work in Spain (employed or self-employed), you contribute to Spanish Seguridad Social and are automatically covered by public healthcare.
For non-retired, non-working residents
If you're neither retired nor working (passive income, remote work for a foreign employer), you must take out private health insurance. This is a mandatory condition for obtaining your residence certificate.
Popular private insurers in Spain:
- Sanitas
- Adeslas
- Asisa
- DKV

If you bring your French car with you, you have 6 months to register it in Spain once you become a resident. This is handled via a gestoria (expect €300-500 in fees plus registration tax).
