Noche del Vino: the night a whole village turns into a wine festival

🍇 What is the Noche del Vino?

Every year, on the night of 14–15 August — the feast of the Assumption — the village of Cómpeta, tucked into the hills of the Axarquía, celebrates the start of the grape harvest with one of the most authentic, wildest festivals in Andalusia: the Noche del Vino, literally "the Night of Wine".

This isn't an attraction put on for tourists. It's a century-old local tradition, significant enough to have been officially declared a Fiesta de Interés Turístico Nacional de Andalucía — a rare label reserved for culturally significant national events. Think of it as Andalusia's answer to Oktoberfest, Mediterranean-style, played out in the whitewashed lanes of a mountain village.

🎉 How the night unfolds

The festival kicks off in the late afternoon on the main square, where wooden vats are set up for the traditional pisada de la uva — barefoot grape treading, done exactly as it was centuries ago. Volunteers, often in traditional dress, crush freshly picked grapes to the cheers of the crowd.

Then comes the tasting: vino dulce (local sweet wine, a moscatel produced on the surrounding hillsides) flows freely, served in cups at a symbolic price on every street in the village. You'll also find the traditional migas (fried semolina with bacon and peppers) and other mountain specialities served at street-side tables.

As night falls, flamenco and traditional music groups take over: singing, guitar, spontaneous dancing in the cobbled lanes. The party carries on until the early hours, in an atmosphere that's both lively and welcoming — families, young people, tourists and locals all mixing without distinction.

✨ Why this festival is unique in Andalusia

Unlike other traditions celebrated across all of Spain on the same night (such as the beach bonfires of Noche de San Juan), the Noche del Vino only exists in a handful of wine-producing villages of inland Andalusia, and Cómpeta's is considered the most spectacular and best preserved. You won't find this exact experience anywhere else on the coast.

It's also a total immersion into rural, authentic Andalusia, miles away from the touristy vibe of the seafront. For many British and northern European visitors settled or on holiday along the Costa del Sol, this is often the first genuine Spanish "village fiesta" they experience — far from the coastal tourist bars.

Getting there from the coast

Most visitors stay on the coast (Torrox Costa or Nerja) and drive up for the evening. The road up to Cómpeta winds through terraced vineyards and olive groves — gorgeous by day, best driven carefully at night on the way back. Parking in the village fills up quickly: arrive before 7:30pm if you want to avoid a long walk, or consider a taxi/ride-share for the evening.

Make the most of being in the area to extend your discovery: Cómpeta is just a few kilometres from Frigiliana and the famous ghost village of El Acebuchal. Many visitors plan a full day out: white villages in the afternoon, Noche del Vino in the evening.
